Some Code PINK members will attend this event, but not enough to form an official contingent.

Sunday, August 10 – 3PM Monthly Code PINK gathering 30th street Station South side. Cindy will facilitate and bring a chapter from “Shock Doctrine" for our irregular reading group. We will review the last month actions. Kathleen will touch base will the anti-McCain group to see if there are actions we can join in on or materials we can use. We will plan for the Code PINK Labor Day parade contingent – something like a pink purse drill team.

Here's what we cooked up PINK for the month of May and early June.

Friday, May 16: 5:30 - 6:30 PM. Gather on the street behind Trader Joe's for a Code PINK table to hand out leaflets, collect signatures on our fancy new post cards and get folks to leave a phone message for Casey and Specter on cell phones we will have right there. Then off to the Naked Chocolate Cafe for a member's birthday celebration!

Sunday, May 18th: 1 - 3 PM Gathering at a members home in West Philly to prepare props and practice for our new "Waitress - Did you order this war?" action*. Cal 215-474-4081 for the address.

Saturday, May 24th: 5 6:30 PM Gather at 2nd & Market street to unveil the "Waitress Action"*

Sunday, June 1st: 3 - 4:30 PM Monthly Code PINK gathering 30th Street Station, south side. Look for us at one of the tables.

Friday, June 6th: First Friday. Gather at 2nd & Market for our "Make art not war" table. Leaflets, postcards, phone calls, who knows what else?

* What is the Waitress Action?

Code Pinkies to pose as waitresses where restaurants have tables set up on the public street (no risk of trespass). Show diners our waitress trays with glued on war toys scenario. "Did you order this?" we ask the diners. The answer to this question is, "well, you paid for it!" Educational leaflet is given the diner, looks like a restaurant menu, with war menu items and the cost. A great interactive way to have fun and education folks about the cost of the war!

Stop Violence Against Iraqi Women ..
Let Us Work Together for Justice, and Equality

Despite the relative improvement in the security situation, our Iraqi people continue to live in an atmosphere of general chaos that is unprecedented for Iraq or other countries. Perhaps the most important manifestation of this chaos is the lawlessness, unbridled terrorism, insecurity and the spread of organized crime. This situation has claimed the lives of more than fifty women during the second half of this year, with the murders being carried out by extremist and reactionary forces and criminal gangs, under various social, religious and political motives and pretexts.Iraqi women, who are subjected to various forms of discrimination, oppression and exploitation, and who face violence on a daily basis and through various means, are today facing mass killings because of the widespread terrorism targeting them. Most heinous murders are committed against them, in broad daylight with impunity. The killings of women in the city of Basra are but a terrible proof of the barbarism of their perpetrators and those who stand behind them. Despite the condemnation of these crimes, the government and the relevant authorities have not taken the necessary measures against these crimes, to put an end to them and punish their perpetrators.We, in Iraqi Women s League, strongly condemn the crimes of killing women in Basra and other Iraqi towns, and denounce all forms of violations of human rights in Iraq, and call upon international organizations, the Iraqi Government and relevant authorities to:

1 - Send an international fact-finding mission to Iraq, to be organized by the UN High Commission for Human Rights with the participation of international human rights organizations, to investigate the crimes against women, help the Iraqi authorities to identify the perpetrators and work to stop these crimes.

2 - Reveal the criminals and those who stand behind them, and bring them to justice.

3 - Disclose the outcome of the investigations.

4 - Take measures to safeguard personal freedoms that are constitutionally guaranteed.

5 - Take deterrent measures to ensure the safety of citizens and protect their lives.

6 - Act firmly to improve the conditions of women and facilitate their involvement in the reconstruction process.

Saturday 12/15 and 12/22 - to be decided - but we'll be out there standing up for peace!

During the month we'll be reading The End of America by Naomi Wolf. Copies are available from House of Our Own and other bookstores around Philly. Then....

1/6 Happy New Year! Instead of our regular meeting at 30th Street Station, we'll be meeting at a member's home in West Philly. 3 PM for the monthly gathering and 4 PM for yummy potluck and book discussion. Maybe planning an action stemming from our take on the book.

Video and personal accounts – Women and the Struggle in Oaxaca

November 8th, 7 PM, Friends Center - 1501 Cherry street
An evening of video and personal accounts about women’s struggles in Oaxaca Mexico. Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico. Women there have been in open struggle against globalization and political corruption since 2004. We offer this evening of education and solidarity with our sisters in Mexico. Two short videos and a presentation by women who have been living in Oaxaca during the recent confrontations.
Co-sponsored by Code Pink Philly and Global Women’s Strike.

Weekly vigils to share information about the war/occupation. Get Philadelphians to contact Senators Casey and Specter and demand they stop all funding for the war.

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the Bush administration’s lies, attacks on Iraq, dangerous expansion of the President’s powers, neglect of public welfare, and corruption at the highest levels. We call on US House of Representatives to impeach and the US Senate to try Vice-President Cheney and President Bush on the following charges that:

* Dick Cheney corrupted the intelligence process to generate false evidence accusing Iraq of possessing chemical and nuclear weapons and of cooperating with Al Qaeda on 9/11 to justify a war.

* Dick Cheney committed a felony by exposing covert CIA operative Valerie Plame to punish her husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, for not supporting Cheney’s allegation that Iraq was seeking uranium in Africa.

* Dick Cheney exceeded his authority by threatening to attack Iran since the power to declare is reserved to Congress in the Constitution.

* George Bush lied to Congress to gain authority to launch a pre-emptive invasion and occupation of Iraq based on false charges about weapons of mass destruction and involvement in 9/11.

* George Bush betrayed our troops by sending them into an unnecessary war, without needed equipment, without a realistic strategy or exit plan, and without adequate health care for wounded soldiers.

* George Bush caused the death of tens of thousands of civilians, the ruin of city and countryside, and the unleashing of civil war in Iraq, a country that never attacked the US, in defiance of the UN charter.

* George Bush permitted the torture of prisoners of war in Abu Graib and Guantanamo Bay, in violation of the Geneva Convention.

* George Bush undermined the right to know what we are charged with if arrested, to have access to a lawyer, and to a speedy, fair, and public trial by creating the category “enemy combatant,” prisoners with no rights, and Guantanamo Bay, a prison with no law. He disappeared an unknown number of terrorist suspects, holding some without charge or access to counsel or courts and rendering some to other countries to be tortured.

* Dick Cheney and George Bush plotted to deliver obscene profits to defense contractors who contribute to Republican candidates by hiring civilian contractors for military functions, issuing no-bid cost-plus contracts in Iraq, and paying for shoddy equipment and non-existent or incomplete work. This has wasted tens of billions of dollars, endangered our troops, made a mockery of our promises of reconstruction in Iraq, starved US social programs, and cheated US taxpayers.

* George Bush ordered spying on US citizens and groups without a warrant from any court.

* George Bush undermined the Constitutional separation of powers with his extensive use of signing statements on legislation. He has stolen Congress’ power to make law and the Supreme Court’s power to interpret law.
* George Bush suppressed evidence about global warming and opposed laws and regulations to reduce America’s contribution to the problem.

* George Bush vacationed while people drowned during hurricane Katrina and has made rebuilding after the largest natural disaster in a century a low priority.

When “elected” officials hold themselves above the law, when their actions endanger public welfare and lead towards tyranny at home and chaos and destruction abroad, they have shown themselves unfit to lead and must be removed from office.
